RICHMOND —
Richmond police have charged a Berea man in connection with the theft of personal checks from the owner of a local business.
Anthony W. Johnson, 32, Lester Street, was charged Tuesday with theft by unlawful taking and two counts of second-degree forgery.
The owner of Yesterday’s Antiques, 1409 Lexington Road, reported Jan. 30 that her personal checkbook and two cameras had been stolen from the store Jan. 21.
The victim did not realize the items had been taken until she was called by her bank and informed that two of her personal checks had been written at locations in Berea for $550 and $720, according to a Richmond police news release.
The victim discovered her checkbook and two cameras – a silver Sony Cybershot and a silver Canon Powershot – had been taken from her business the day two customers were observed near the store’s office.
The RPD’s follow-up investigation identified Johnson as a suspect, and it was further determined he had passed two of the stolen and forged checks at Richmond businesses in the amounts of $609 and $539.
Johnson was interviewed at the police station Tuesday, and then was charged. He already was lodged at the Madison County Detention Center after being charged Saturday in connection with other forgeries.
$1,000 in tools stolen from vacant home
The owner of an unoccupied residence on Lowell Avenue reported Monday that the home had been broken into during the previous two days. Entry was gained by forcing open a basement door, according to the RPD.
The following tools, worth a total of $1,075, were reported stolen: a Stihl gas-powered extension chainsaw, a Hitachi cordless drill and a small, unknown brand portable work light.
400-pound air compressor stolen from Hager Cabinets
A representative of Hager Cabinets, Eastern Bypass, reported Monday that a Titan air compressor, worth $650, was stolen from the back of a company truck some time during the previous two days. The truck was parked inside a secure fenced area of the business, and the compressor weighs about 400 pounds.
Other thefts:
• A complainant reported Friday that the external York air-conditioning unit had been stolen from the rear of the an unoccupied residence on Clay Drive during the previous night. Estimated loss was $3,600.
• A complainant reported Feb. 6 that a Dell laptop computer, worth $800, had been stolen from his office space in the 100 block of East Main Street during the previous day.
