BEREA — Berea Independent Schools has announced a proposed schedule to compensate for 11 days missed during the school year because of inclement weather and the H1N1 virus.
The schools were closed for seven days during the first three months of 2010 because of weather and for four days in October when illness forced the district to shut down.
“For our district to have 10 or more days dismissed due to illness or weather is highly unusual,” said Donna Lovell, director of districtwide services.
Two of the illness-related missed days already were made up during a shortened holiday break in December.
The calendar committee met on Tuesday to discuss a revised schedule for the remaining make-up days and will recommend that schedule to the school board during Monday’s meeting.
Under the proposed schedule, students will be required to attend school during the first two days of spring break, on Monday, March 29 and Tuesday, March 30.
Spring break will then take place from Wednesday, March 31 through Sunday, April 4.
The school year will be extended an extra week to make up for the remaining days, with the final day of school moved from May 26 to June 4.
Graduation will be moved from May 28 to June 4.
The last day for teachers will be June 5.
Once the school board makes an official decision on the amended schedule, parents will be notified of changes, Lovell said.
“We hope with this amended calendar that we will gain two additional instructional days prior to state assessment and further address the needs of our students as we have been intentionally focused on throughout this year,” Lovell said.
