RIchmond student to teach English in China

RICHMOND — China and its culture have always fascinated Richmond resident Jerry Ferrell Jr.

He started to learn the Chinese language and explore the country’s customs more as a student at Madison Central High School.

This summer his education will extend far beyond books and other media as he travels to China. He will also get the opportunity to teach Chinese students about his language and homeland.

Ferrell will spend about five weeks in China teaching middle and high school Chinese students intermediate English and American culture.

During his stay, he will stay in Hong Kong and Shaanxi. This will be Ferrell’s first time journeying out the U.S. He said is both “excited and nervous” about the trip.

The 21 year-old said he first found out about the Engage program by ELIC (or the English Language Institute/China) at Asbury College, where he attends school.

“I saw an advertisement at school but it was too late for that year so I worked on it for the next year,” said the creative writing major.

Ferrell said it took him about a year to get the application together because there were so many pieces he needed to gather, such as references from professors and pastors and an explanation of his faith, plus a phone interview.

“They asked me how comfortable I would be going through the country and interacting with people different than me,” Ferrell said.

And last July, he got the call. He was going to China in summer 2012.

Although his college required him to have at least one cross-cultural experience before graduating, Ferrell thinks “it’s important to go out into the world and serve God.”

His grandmother was excited for him, yet also worried about the cost of the trip. But Ferrell had a solution. He applied for an Asbury initiative grant of about $6,000 and received it.

“This is something really big for me,” he said. “It’s so great to be able to give something back to someone in such a huge capacity.”

Ferrell is the son of Jerry and stepmother Newllynn Ferrell, and mother Teriah. He is also the grandson of the late Paul Ferrell and his wife Ruth.

And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (Rev 21:22-27)
