Gail Sue Linville Bowles, 60

Lakes Funeral Home

Old State Road — Gail Sue Linville Bowles, age 60, of Old State Road, died Saturday Jan. 26, 2013, in Lexington.

Gail was a registered nurse and had worked at Rockcastle County Hospital and was a member at Fairview Baptist Church.

She is the daughter of the late Ed Linville and Irene Peters Hall, and was preceded in death by: her husband, Donnie Bowles, who passed away in 2009; a sister, Linda Lou Linville; and her brother-in-law, Wayne Watkins.    

Gail is survived by: her daughter, Michelle Miller (Shannon Lakes); her brother Billy (Betty) Linville; and sisters Wanda (Darryl) Ellison and Waveline Watkins; and her granddaughters, Callie and Caitlyn Miller; and stepmother, Geneva Linville.

Funeral services will be Thursday Jan. 31, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Vaughn Rasor officiating Burial will be in the Rice Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris Cobb, Trenton Harding, Chris Linville, Josh Abner, Robbie Johnson, Jeremy Powell and Jason Ambrose. Honorary pallbearers will be Eunice Miller, Rose Brandenburg, Evelyn Garrett, Mark King, Debbie Bowles, Barbara Hall, the Sunshine Friends Sunday School Class and Shannon Lakes.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 9 pm at Lakes Funeral Home.

    He was born April 12, 1926, in Rockcastle County to Charles and Pearl Day Thacker, both of whom preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine Hutchinson Thacker, and one daughter, Brenda Kay Dargavell.

Was Eastern Kentucky University justified in agreeing to a $400,000 salary plus benefits, including a housing allowance, for incoming president Michael Benson?

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
