Vivian Landis, 91

Vivian Landis (nee Center), 91, of Woodbury, N.J., died Sept. 20, 2012, at Innova Health & Rehab, Deptford, N.J.

She was born on born April 22, 1921, in Gosneyville and graduated from Berea College in 1943, majoring in home economics with minors in music and chemistry. She then worked as a chemist for Cities Service in Lake Charles, La., until 1945. She married Phillip Landis in August, 1944, and she and her family moved to New Jersey in 1947 and to Woodbury in 1958.

She was active in the auxiliary for The Robin’s Nest. She was also active in the Woodbury and Gloucester County PTAs, including being president of the former organization. A strong supporter of education, she spent several years as a substitute teacher in local townships.

She is survived by two brothers, Daniel (Barbara) Center of Tampa, Fla., and Luther (Yvonda) Center of Berea, and two sisters, Bernice Robertson of Berea, Mabel Boehm of Longmont, Colo.; two sons, Bryan (Carol) of Manchester, Mo., and Michael (Bernadette) of Mullica Hill, N.J.  She is survived by four grandchildren, Jennifer (Eric) Hays of St. Peters, Mo., Chris (Sarah) Landis of Winchester, Mo., Patrick (Nicole) Landis of Mullica Hill, N.J. and Jeremy (Amy) of Pitman, N.J. and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted Nov. 3, 2012, at Danforth Chapel in Berea at 10 a.m. Friends may visit beginning at 9:30 a.m. She will be buried after in Berea Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 30 South 17th Street, Suite 800, Philadelphia, Pa. 19103.

    She was born on March 16, 1926 in Laurel County, the youngest of five children, born to the late William Albert and Nora Bowman Warren.

    He was born April 12, 1926, in Rockcastle County to Charles and Pearl Day Thacker, both of whom preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine Hutchinson Thacker, and one daughter, Brenda Kay Dargavell.
