Noel Stephens, 83

BEREA — Dr. Noel Stephens Jr., 83, of Berea, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, in McCready Manor in Richmond. He was born in Richmond to the late Noel Stephens Sr. and Betty Coffey Stephens.

Dr. Stephens was retired from the Agriculture department at Berea College where he taught for 40 years. He ran the Berea College Farms and was advisor to the Ag Student Union. He was a member and former deacon of the Berea Baptist Church and the Baraca Sunday School Class.

Dr. Stephens was a member of the Farm House Fraternity at the University of Kentucky. He received the Bronze Star while serving in the Air Force in the Korean Conflict. He was a past president of the Berea Kiwanis Club and the Madison County 4-H Council.

He is survived by: his children, Cynthia S. Matney (Jeff) of Grundy, Va., Margaret S. Robbins (Brian) Robbins of Suwanee, Ga., Donald K. Stephens (Kay) of Jacksonville, Fla., Noel Stephens, III of Georgetown, Ky.; his grandchildren, Stephanie M. Wheawill (Matt) of Richmond, Va., Meredith Matney of Pikeville, Ky., Andrew Robbins of Suwanee, Ga; and a great grandchild, Charlie Wheawill of Richmond, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Stephens.

Funeral services for Stephens will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Berea Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Slemp, the Rev. Jonas Hill and Marvin Farmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Berea Health Ministry or Berea Baptist Church Building Fund.

Pallbearers will be Lowell McCollum, Charles Kilburn, Doug Shirley, Larry Harrison, Marvin DuBose and Don Buchannan. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Baraca Sunday School Class.
