Juanita P. Vass Curtis, 82, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Ky. Juanita is the widow of the late Mark H. Curtis Jr. Juanita was a long-time member of the St. Clare Catholic Church and recently attended Deer Stable Baptist Church in Sand Gap where she had been living the last few years.
Born in Sweet Chalybeate, Va., to the late Charles E. and Pauline Brown Vass, Juanita has lived in Letcher County, Ky., Perth Amboy, N.J., and Berea, Ky. Juanita was a past Berea College employee where she worked at the Alumni Building, she worked for Papa Leno’s restaurant for many years and the Old Kentucky Camp Ground. Juanita and her husband also were foster parents to 54 different children through the years.
Juanita is survived by: her children, Mark H Curtis III of Amma, W.Va., Juanita P. Hersom of Sand Gap, Ky., Robert A. Curtis of Berea, Alice C. Adams of Letcher, Ky., Joseph S. Curtis of Berea, Gwendolyn Back of Letcher, Ky., Meredith Curtis of Sand Gap, Ky., Roy Curtis of Berea and Candy Adkins of Berea; her sister, Violet Marie Vance of Barboursville, W.Va.; 22 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren also survive Juanita.
Juanita was preceded in death by: her brothers, Charles E. Vass and Charles O. Vass.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Lakes Funeral Home with burial in Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation is Friday after 6 p.m. at Lakes Funeral Home in Berea.
