Paul Thomas, 82

RICHMOND — Paul Thomas, 82, formerly of Richmond, passed away Thursday, January 10, in his in his Okeechobee, Fla., home.

He was born April 18, 1930, to the late Spencer (Dick) and Ruth York Thomas.

He is survived by: his wife, Brenda Estes Thomas, Okeechobee; son, Gary Thomas and special friend Eva Hisle of Richmond; three daughters, Martha Ann Thomas of Lancaster, Traci Thomas and Becky Breau (Keith) of Okeechobee; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Bettie Olds of Richmond.; two nephews, Mike Olds of Tennessee, David Olds of Richmond; and one niece, Jane Olds Sexton of Richmond.

Visitation will be at the Combs Parsons and Collins Funeral Home on Friday, January 18, from 10 a.m. until noon. Funeral services will begin immediately following visitation with Bro. James Chrisman officiating.

Private burial will be in the Thomas family cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mike Olds, David Olds, Spencer Thomas, Nick Olds, Tom York and Bill Hammons. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy and Nadine Thomas, Harold and Evelyn Harris, Toots Wells, Ann Brady and Linville Hall.

    He was born April 12, 1926, in Rockcastle County to Charles and Pearl Day Thacker, both of whom preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine Hutchinson Thacker, and one daughter, Brenda Kay Dargavell.

Was Eastern Kentucky University justified in agreeing to a $400,000 salary plus benefits, including a housing allowance, for incoming president Michael Benson?

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
