RICHMOND —
Johnnie Walker “John” Worrell, 87, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, widower of Irene Miller Worrell, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012.
A native of Estill County, he was born on December 22, 1924, the son of the late Alex and Minnie Taylor Worrell. John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army and a retired engineer with Raytheon Corporation in Madisonville, Ky. Previously, he had worked for GTE Sylvania in Winchester and Okonite in Richmond.
After he retired, John worked on several Habitat for Humanity projects and traveled twice to Brazil on mission trips to build churches. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond and its Friendship Bible Sunday School Class. He enjoyed his family, church, golf and traveling throughout the United States, having visited every state except Alaska.
John has two daughters, Diana (Lee) Stevenson, Knoxville, Tenn., and Jonnie Lyn (Gary) Watson, Grant, Ala., and a son, Steve (Janice) Worrell of Richmond, Kentucky. He has four granddaughters, Cassie (Richard) Watt, Carrie (David) Howard, Amy (Shane) Maples and Dorothy Stevenson Hollon; and three grandsons, Jason (Melissa) Worrell, Brandon Watson, and Kevin (Alana) Reynolds. He has six great-grandchildren, Hannah, Abigail and Andrew Howard, Katherine Worrell and Tarryn and Tate Reynolds. He is also survived by three brothers, Kenton, Doug and Harold; and a sister, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. John leaves behind many good friends and a special friend, Ms. Della Jackson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Thaddeus, Charlie, Stanley, Claude, Allen and Francis; and four sisters, Grace, Naomia, Spicie and Christine.
Funeral service 7 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012, at the First Baptist Church, 450 Eastern Bypass with Rev. Bill Fort and Rev. Bill Worrell officiating. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Irvine with Bro. David Howard officiating.
Pallbearers will be Jason Worrell, Brandon Watson, David Howard, Richard Watt, Shane Maples and Kevin Reynolds.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Friendship Bible Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church in Richmond.
The family expresses their deepest appreciation to the Staffs of McCready Manor and Telford Terrace for their excellent care and dedication during John’s stay with them.
