Ernie Durham Jr. 80

Richmond

RICHMOND — Ernie Durham Jr., 80, of Richmond, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family.

Ernie was born August 3, 1932, in Bond, Ky., a son of the late Ernest (Papa) and Beatrice (Mimi) Ison Durham.

He received a bachelor of arts from Eastern Kentucky University in 1955. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he finished his service in 1957.

Ernie traveled for Begley Drug Company, opening one-hour dry cleaners in the Midwest, where he met Judy McFadden in Muscatine, Iowa. Ernie and Judy married August 20, 1961, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Nichols, Iowa. They returned to Richmond, Ky.. in 1967, where he owned a number of businesses. Beginning in the late 1970s, Ernie opened and operated several package liquor stores.

Ernie loved spending afternoons at Keeneland race track and long weekends in Las Vegas, singing carols at Christmas, soaking up sunshine on the beach and winning a good game of cards — all with family and friends.

He enjoyed traveling, especially to the desert Southwest because of his love for Indian folklore. Ernie’s favorite sport was golf, and he was renowned for his putting expertise at the Madison Country Club.

He was a dad who was one of kind. As a granddad, he adored his four grandchildren and was a best friend to each one.

Ernie is survived by: his wife of 51 years, Judy; two brothers, Kenneth N. Durham (Mary Ann), Mesa, Ariz., and Rondall G. Durham (Ann), Richmond, Ky.; daughter, Lisa A. Durham Young (Bruce), La Grange, Ill.; son, Kevin M. Durham (Whitney), Lexington, Ky.; four grandchildren, Kristen Young, Mia Durham, Wells Durham and Daisy B. Durham. He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 8, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Richmond.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at St. Mark Catholic Church.

A private family burial will follow at the Richmond Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Telford Community Center YMCA, 1100 E. Main St., Richmond, KY, or St. Mark Catholic School, 608 West Main St., Richmond, KY 40475.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice Care Plus, Berea, Kentucky, for their compassionate care and support.
