J.C. Agee, 80

RICHMOND — J.C. “Whitie” Agee, 80, husband of Billie Agee, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, in Lexington, Kentucky, at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was retired from Eastern Kentucky University and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War.  Whitie was of the Baptist faith.

Whitie was the son of the late Irvine and Hallie B. Goodlett Agee. He was preceded in death by: his first wife, Sadie Marie Fullilove Agee; a special sister-in-law, Edith Agee; two sisters, Mary Lee Rollins and Josephine Tudor; and one brother, Charles Agee.

Survivors include: his wife, Billie Agee; one son, James Mitchell Agee (Terri) of Stanford, Ky.; one step daughter, Debbie Nelson (Scott) of Nancy, Ky.; one brother, Sherman Agee of Richmond, Ky.; one sister, Christine Donathan; five grandchildren, Jamie Agee, Kandice Agee, Kaleigh Agee, Mason Agee, Sadie Agee; two stepgrandchildren, Stephen Padgett, Brandon Padgett; two great-grandchildren, Paiten Serre and Kailynn Webster; one special nephew, Doug Risk; one brother-in-law, Mitch Donathan.

Funeral services for Whitie will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, January 7, 2013, at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Kenneth Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison County Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Jr. Agee, Richy Lowery, Johnny Clines, Clay Clines, Danny Mason Short, Michael Short, Rick Allsbrook, Joe Whalin, Danny Rawlins and Michael Rawlins.

    He was born April 12, 1926, in Rockcastle County to Charles and Pearl Day Thacker, both of whom preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine Hutchinson Thacker, and one daughter, Brenda Kay Dargavell.

Was Eastern Kentucky University justified in agreeing to a $400,000 salary plus benefits, including a housing allowance, for incoming president Michael Benson?

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
