RICHMOND —
William J. Newman, 84, husband of Edna Newman, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Arcadia Cove of Richmond.
He was a member of Viney Fork Baptist Church.
William was born February 3, 1929, in Hamilton, Ohio, to the late William and Addie Woods Newman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Elzy Lee Newman, and a sister, Thelma Isaacs.
William retired from the Bluegrass Army Depot in 1984. He served honorably in the Navy, National Guard and Army Reserves with over 30 years of service to his country.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: four children, William (Caroline) Newman, Rob (Wanda) Newman, Donna (Tony) Masters and Brian (Suzy) Newman; eight grandchildren, Brandy (Alfred) Winkler, Randy (Amy) Newman, Adam (Allison) Griggs, Kristi (Ben) Edwards, Travis (Sherry) Newman, Casey (Chris) McKean, Tyler Newman and Becky Newman; five great-grandsons, Hunter and Fisher Winkler, Peyton and Henry Logan Griggs, Carter Newman; and one great-granddaughter, Caroline Harper Edwards.
William is also survived by a brother, James Newman, and an aunt, Margaret Shepherd.
William took on a few nicknames during his life that signifies his fun and loving nature, from “Sarge” to “Fox” and then to “Paps.” He will be remembered by many as a coach of Little League baseball, talking on his CB radio, playing Rook and passing out Papaw dollars to the youngsters.
William was a member of Kingston Lodge No. 315, F&AM and Waco Lodge No. 338, F&AM. He also proudly served as Past District Deputy Grand Master for the Grand Lodge of Kentucky.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, and honorary pallbearers will be his lodge brothers.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home in Richmond, Ky. Burial will follow in Flatwoods Cemetery of Waco with military honors observed.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 11, from 5 to 9 p.m. with Masonic services conducted on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
