Thurman Joseph “T.J.” Borders, 89

RICHMOND — Thurman Joseph “T.J.” Borders, 89, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013, in the Compassionate Care Center of Richmond.

He was born March 15, 1923, at Patrick, Kentucky, in Johnson County, to the late Jesse and Marie Chandler Borders. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Dyer Borders.

Mr. Borders was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic, and he taught his trade at the Mayo State Vocational School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII in which he specialized as an aviation metal- smith. Mr. Borders was of the Baptist faith, having recently been baptized at Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

He is survived by: one son, Ronnie Borders (Avonelle) of Paintsville; stepson John Christian (Patsy) of Richmond; one daughter, Debbie Darby of Prestonsburg; two brothers, Earl Dean Borders (Jewell) and Douglas Borders, as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Robert Christian; a stepdaughter, Billie Kelley; and two brothers, Paul and Arnold Borders.

Services for Mr. Borders will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Fred Livingood officiating, with burial following in Flatwoods Cemetery.

Friends will be received from noon until service time at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Hospice Compassionate Care Center, 350 Isaacs Lane, Richmond, KY 40475.

He was born April 12, 1926, in Rockcastle County to Charles and Pearl Day Thacker, both of whom preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine Hutchinson Thacker, and one daughter, Brenda Kay Dargavell.
