Paint Lick —
Vernon Hawley, 74, of Paint Lick, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012, in the VA Medical Center of Lexington.
He was born in Garrard County, Kentucky, on August 19, 1938, to Sam and Dorothy Cheeks Hawley, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a retired construction contractor and owned and operated an excavation business. He was a member of Paint Lick Christian Church.
A U.S. Army veteran, he was deployed from Fort Hood, Texas, during the Cuban Missile Crisis for the blockade of Cuba, 50 years ago this month. He also was stationed in Germany.
Vernon loved auto racing and often drove race cars. He enjoyed watching UK athletics, especially basketball.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Ross Hawley; one son, Michael Steven Hawley (Lisa) of Paint Lick; and two grandchildren, Jared and Kristin Hawley. He also leaves one brother, Sam Hawley of Lexington, and one sister, Edna White of Florida.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Ted Faulconer officiating. Burial will follow at the Paint Lick Cemetery at Manse.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
