HAYSI, Va. — Thomas Loyd Cox, 72, of Haysi, Va., passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at his residence.

Mr. Cox was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County, Va., and a member of the Tarpon Freewill Baptist Church. He was a retired coal miner who loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Allen and Sarepta Elkins Cox; his son, Douglas Allyn Cox; and three brothers, Herbert, Jimmy and Jonah Cox.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes Wall Cox of Haysi; one son, David Paul (Angie) Cox, of Clintwood, Va.; seven brothers, Wayne (Evelyn) Cox, Jerry (Alene) Cox, Neal Cox, Kirby Cox, Berton (Benita) Cox, Jessie (Linda) Cox  and Joe Cox all of Clintwood; two sisters, Barbara  (Bobby) O’Quinn of Haysi and Sharon (Alfred) Domjahn of Tomball, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Gloranna Short and Cordie (Nelson) Rollins of Richmond, Ky.; five grandchildren, Nicholas Allen Cox, Andrea Grace Cox, Amber Graham, Brianna Baker and Danielle Perkins; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, November 3, in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Vitatoe and Matthew Fuller officiating. Burial will follow at the Cox Cemetery, Georges Fork, Va., with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday after 5 p.m., with the service beginning at 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family memorial fund.

    He was born April 12, 1926, in Rockcastle County to Charles and Pearl Day Thacker, both of whom preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine Hutchinson Thacker, and one daughter, Brenda Kay Dargavell.

Was Eastern Kentucky University justified in agreeing to a $400,000 salary plus benefits, including a housing allowance, for incoming president Michael Benson?

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
