The Model Laboratory girls soccer team held East Jessamine scoreless for a half, but couldn’t hold the pace, falling 2-0 Tuesday in Richmond.
The Lady Jaguars (6-1-1) didn’t crack the Model (0-5-1) defense for the first 40 minutes, but only needed a minute to get on the board in the second half. Fifteen minutes later, the Lady Jaguars doubled their lead with a second goal.
“It could have been a very tight game all the way to the end,” Model coach Bill Kirk said. “We have to play from the first minute to the last and we didn’t do that in the second half.”
The game was halted with 18 minutes left to play because of lightning and was eventually called.
While the Lady Jaguars had built a 2-0 lead, they didn’t look to be on their way to a dominating finish when the game was called.
“In the time we had left, there’s always a chance to get back in the game,” Kirk said. “Were we playing well enough to get back in the game at the stage? It’s hard to tell.”
The Lady Patriots matched the Lady Jaguars evenly through the first half. They threatened to take the lead midway through the half, but the East defense didn’t buckle.
“I thought we played reasonably well,” Kirk said. “We played them very close in the first half and we just got caught to start the second half; we weren’t ready. Other than that, I’m quite happy.”
The Lady Patriots remain winless, but Kirk feel confident the team is closing in on the season’s first victory.
“I think we’re making the right steps,” he said. “They’re baby steps, but we’re going in the right direction. Every game we play, there is a little bit of improvement.”
Model tries for that first win Thursday when Berea (8-4) visits at 5:30 p.m.
Berea cruises past Garrard
Before traveling to Model on Thursday, the Lady Pirates first took a trip to Garrard County, where they rolled to an 8-0 win.
All the goals came from the two-pronged attack of Sydney Sandefur and Taylor Powell, who each scored four goals.
The Pirates took some time to get warmed up. They didn’t find the net until 22 minutes into the first half. Sandefur scored and Powell added two more to give the Pirates a 3-0 edge. That lead ballooned to 5-0 at halftime thanks to a pair of goals from Sandefur.
Powell scored another pair of goals in the second half and Sandefur scored her fourth and the team’s final goal not long after. Sandefur also had one assist while Haley Johnson was also credited with an assist.
The shutout was the sixth of the season for senior Noah Short.
