RICHMOND —
The Lady Colonels overcame a lackluster first half to come from behind and post a hard-fought 53-49 win over Southeast Missouri State Saturday in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The win was the third straight for EKU and improves its record to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in the OVC, while SEMO drops to 8-14 and 2-7 in the OVC.
The Lady Redhawks rode a 15-2 run mid-way through the first half to take a 22-16 lead at the half.
The Lady Colonels, who were 0-of-8 from behind the three-point line in the first half, finally got the offense going and turned up the defensive pressure in the second half.
Trailing 32-24, a Marie Carpenter three pointer began a 12-2 EKU run that ended with two Carpenter free throws and the Lady Colonels up 36-34 with 9:23 left in the game.
The game was tied five times over the next four minutes before SEMO took a 41-40 lead with 5:08 to go on a basket and free throw by Allyson Bradshaw.
Thanks to some big plays by Miranda Maples off the bench, EKU then took control.
A Maples three pointer with 3:30 to go started a 9-2 run by the Lady Colonels as they forged a 49-43 lead with just less than a minute to go.
After a basket by Jordan Hunter with 49.6 seconds to go cut the lead to 49-45, Maples once again came through with a big rebound of a missed shot to give EKU another possession.
The two teams traded free throws before Brittany Harriel pulled the Lady Redhawks to within three at 52-49 with 17.2 seconds to go.
A Carpenter free throw pushed the lead to four and Maples stole the ball on the ensuing trip to seal the win for the Lady Colonels.
Carpenter led the Lady Colonels with 15 points despite some early foul trouble.
Senior Alex Jones recorded her 32nd double-double of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Brittany Coles added 12 points and five rebounds.
Jade Barber finished with six points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Maples had three and La’Rae Allen and Alexus Cooper had two points each.
The Lady Colonels continue their road trip on Monday when they take on preseason OVC favorite UT-Martin at 8 p.m.
