RICHMOND —
Madison Central honored its three senior wrestlers prior to a showdown with state powerhouse Wayne County Friday in Richmond.
The Indians picked up four victories — all by pins — but dropped a 42-25 decision to the Cardinals.
Central senior Connor Caskey was not able to participate in the meet because of an injury, but the Indians’ other two upperclassmen were involved in exciting matches.
Despite battling an illness, Tucker Fair defeated his opponent in the 220-pound weight class. Fair was in trouble at times in the opening period, but regrouped and won by a pin in the second period.
In the heavyweight division, Central’s Paul Couch took on one of the best wrestlers in the state. The Indian senior was in control for most of the first period, taking a 5-3 lead, but was pinned in the second period.
Dylan Mays, an eighth-grader opened the meet with a win in the 140-pound weight class, pinning his opponent in the second period. After Darion Coleman (145 lbs) fell by pin in the second period, Jack Lindsey (152) and Storm Savage (162) picked up back-to-back wins - both by pins in the first period.
Justice Gardner (170) fell by pin in the first period, Logan Thomas (197) fell by pin in the second period and Rijan McMannis, a seventh-grader, fell by pin in the first period at 106 pounds.
In the final match of the meet, freshman Chris Morrow lost a 13-2 decision. Morrow escaped a pin just before the end of the second period, but couldn’t make up enough points in the final three minutes.
Central is set to compete in the regional meet next weekend in Woodford County.
Prior to the Central-Wayne County match-up, Madison Southern took on Wayne County. The Eagles were not able to win a match against the state-powerhouse Cardinals.

Following the Kentucky All-Star team’s big loss to the Indiana All-Stars Friday at Freedom Hall, Mr. Basketball Dominique Hawkins was immediately surrounded by a throng of reporters as he left the floor.
