H.S. HOOPS: Central handles Montgomery County again

RICHMOND — The first meeting of the season between Montgomery County and Madison Central wasn’t really all that dramatic.

The Lady Indians scored the first 11 points of the game and rolled to a 13-point win in the semifinals of the Gateway Holiday Classic last week in Mt. Sterling.

The rematch was more interesting — at least for a half.

Central had just an eight-point lead at halftime (33-25), but opened up the second half on a 9-0 run and pulled away for a 71-55 win in Richmond. The Lady Indians out-scored Montgomery County 22-6 in the third quarter.

“We did a lot of good things in the second half,” Central coach Robbie Cooksey said. “We kind of opened it up a little bit. They didn’t shoot the ball well. They are a solid team. That being said, I thought everyone played well.”

Ashton Feldhaus had 22 points and 12 rebounds, Larryn Brooks added 21 points, four rebounds and three assists and Bailey O’Bryan had 15 points.

The Lady Indians (12-2) have won 10 of their past 11 games and their only losses on the season have come against No. 1 Marion County.

Brooks and Feldhaus fueled the second-half run. Brooks had a three-pointer and another basket, while Feldhaus had four points during that run.

Feldhaus later added a three-pointer and a three-point play that pushed the Central lead to 48-29. The senior also hit a three-pointer late in the third quarter that put the Lady Indians up 55-31.

Central shot 52.8 percent from the field, including 54 percent (14-of-26) in the second half.

“We shoot that way, we are going to win a lot of basketball games,” Cooksey said.

O’Bryan was seven-of-11 from the field and also had one rebound, one assist and one steal.

O’Bryan had four points and two assists in the first meeting with Montgomery County.

“She has stepped up,” Cooksey said of O’Bryan. “She ran the floor. If we can get that kind of production from her every night, that’s what we need.”

Shadae Bosley had six points and nine rebounds, Heather Hinkle had five points and Lindsey Johns had two points.

The game was just the second at home for the Lady Indians this season — the first since Nov. 28. Central will play five of its next seven games at home, including a showdown with Henry Clay on Saturday (7:30 p.m.).

“It’s nice to be at home,” Cooksey said. “It’s nice to see some familiar faces.”
