RICHMOND —
All it took was a quick glance and a few simple words.
With time running out on a Senior Night comeback, Ashton Feldhaus and Larryn Brooks knew it was time to take control.
“Larryn and I looked at each other with about a minute and a half left and we just said, ‘Let’s go,’” Feldhaus said. “I don’t think any of us ever lost faith.”
Feldhaus and Brooks combined to score their team’s final eight points as Madison Central (23-4) picked up an improbable 56-54 win over Tates Creek (12-16) Tuesday in Richmond. Feldhaus hit a key three pointer with 25 seconds left to get the Lady Indians within one point (53-52), then Brooks delivered the game-winning three-point play with 1.2 seconds showing on the clock.
“We know when it comes down to it, Ashton or Larryn is going to hit a shot for us,” Central coach Robbie Cooksey said.
Feldhaus, a junior forward, finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and seven blocks. Brooks, a junior guard, had 15 points, two steals and one assist.
Central trailed by nine points with just more than two minutes left. Brooks started the comeback with a steal and layup, then Heather Hinkle hit a three pointer that got the Lady Indians back within five points (51-46).
Senior Kristin Congleton hit one-of-two free throws moments later before Brooks slashed the Tates Creek lead to 53-49.
After Feldhaus’ three pointer, Oney Harrison hit one-of-two free throws with 21.1 seconds left to put the Lady Commodores back up by two points (54-52).
On the game-winning play, Brooks scored off an inbounds pass from under the basket. The junior was fouled on the play and hit the free throw to give Central its first lead since the second quarter.
Brooks hit one-of-two free throws in the final second as the Lady Indians extended their winning streak to seven games.
“It’s one of those games where these kids are going to look back in 10 years from now and remember winning on Senior Night,” Cooksey said. “It’s a big win for us.”
Central built a five-point lead in the first quarter, but foul trouble and poor free throw shooting allowed Tates Creek to take charge.
The Lady Commodores put together an 11-0 run and went into halftime with a 25-21 lead after limiting Central to just two points in the second quarter.
“Coach told us at halftime that they would not go away,” Feldhaus said. “Usually, we can pull away from teams, but they are a good team. It was a good win for us.”
The Lady Indians pulled even at 30 before Tates Creek answered with an 8-0 run.
The Lady Commodores were led by Harrison (22 points and five rebounds) and Peyton Hisel (15 points, five rebounds).
“We didn’t play terrible,” Cooksey said. “Tates Creek did a lot of good things. They handled our pressure. They executed well on offense.”
Congleton finished with nine points and five rebounds. Hinkle had five points and two rebounds, Aleia Minter (senior) had three rebounds, Chrystal Miller (senior) had three points and two rebounds and Bailey O’Bryan had two points and one rebound.
Central shot 45 percent from the field and was nine-of-19 from the free throw line.
The Lady Indians are set to wrap up the regular season Friday at Dunbar.
