RICHMOND —
The Indians got beat up and banged up last week against state powerhouse Bell County.
During Madison Central’s 55-8 loss to the Bobcats Saturday at the Heart of Bluegrass Classic, injuries forced several key players to the sidelines.
Senior running back Justin Williams had to leave the game early, but did return late in the loss. Junior back Daniel Foster and senior wide receiver Chris Jones were injured in the first half and were forced to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines.
And senior quarterback/linebacker Nick Ford played just one series before an injury suffered in the season opener (North Laurel on Aug. 20) took him out of action.
“It was just one of those games you have to forget about,” Madison Central coach Bert Browne said after the game. “If you dwell on it, it will eat you up.”
The Indians certainly won’t have long to recover from that lopsided loss.
After facing one of the best Class 4A teams in the state last week, they hit the road today to take on one of the best Class 2A programs in the state.
Central (1-1) is set to face Newport Central Catholic (2-0) at 7:30 p.m.
The Thoroughbreds defeated the Indians 38-12 last season in Richmond.
Newport Central Catholic was just 7-6 last season, but from 2005 to 2008 the school made it to the state championship games four-straight years, winning titles in 2006 and 2007.
The Thoroughbreds opened the season with a 35-28 win over Dixie Heights, then defeated Aiken (Ohio) 44-6 last week.
The Indians’ offense came up with big plays in the season opener, but struggled against Bell County. Central finished with just 161 total yards, 28 yards passing and just seven first downs.
Sophomore Hunter Stocker took most of the snaps at quarterback and was just 2-of-10 with one interception.
The Indians did not have a turnover against North Laurel, but gave the ball away twice against Bell County (one interception and a fumble on a kick off return).
“I told the kids, I didn’t do my job,” Browne said. “You weren’t ready to play football. I thought you were ready to play football – and that’s my job to get my team ready to play football. We were flat — and won’t be flat next week.”
