RICHMOND —
The Berea girls soccer team bounced back from its district loss earlier in the week to Madison Central by dismantling Whitley County, 8-1.
The Pirates (7-4) got a five-goal night from Sydney Sandefur Wednesday to coast by the Colonels (2-3) in Williamsburg.
Sandefur also had an assist, as did Hope Tarter, Haley Johnson and even keeper Noah Short.
Taylor Powell scored the other three goals for the Pirates.
Berea started the scoring just 12 minutes into the game. They added another with 13 minutes left to play in the half. That goal started a late barrage in the half. Berea put in two more before the half and the Colonels finally got on the scoreboard with just two minutes left.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Pirates poured it on. They pushed four more goals past the Whitley defense.
Overall, Berea outshot the Colonels 29-3. Whitley failed to attempt a shot in the second half.
The Pirates get a short break before returning to action Sept. 7 at Garrard County (1-3).
Model strong in big loss
The Model girls soccer team might have been shut out by Bourbon County, 6-0, Wednesday, but coach Bill Kirk thinks his team is making strides.
“I was pleased with the way the team is developing,” he said. “I know that sounds strange after we just lost 6-0, but it’s one of those. I know Bourbon County very well. I’ve coached against them for many years and they are aways a well organized, well coached team. And with the numbers we have had this year, I thought it was a very strong performance despite the fact we lost the game.”
The Colonels (5-2) got on the board first on a cross. The Patriots (0-4-1) were facing the sun and Kirk said his keeper misjudged the ball in the sun. The next three goals were hard-earned for the Colonels, as they built a lead.
Model fought back, but never got one past the Bourbon keeper.
“We had about four shots on goal throughout the game,” Kirk said. “We had some good forward pressure without getting any real shots on goal. We had more forard pressure than that, we just didn’t create the openings to get the chances.”
Despite the 6-0 defeat and the Patriots still looking for the season’s first win, Kirk thinks his team performed better than the outcome appears.
“I was proud of the way they played tonight,” he said. “Everybody stepped up tonight. Everyone played hard. It just so happened when we made mistakes, we got punished for them. The performance was much better than the scoreline showed in the end.”
Model returns to action Sept. 7 when the Patriots play host to East Jessamine (5-1).
