GIRLS SOCCER: Southern topples Lincoln County

BEREA — The Madison Southern girls soccer team shut down Lincoln County’s high-powered offense to remain undefeated on the season.

Lincoln County (3-1) had scored 11 goals in each of its first three games, but the Lady Eagles held the Lady Patriots scoreless during a 6-0 victory Tuesday night in Berea.

“Last year we scrimmaged them and tied, so to come out and put six in and keep them from scoring, I think that was a really good game for us,” said Southern coach Katy Cress.

Southern (3-0) took the lead in the early minutes of the first half.

Dakota Gadd had the ball at the top corner of the penalty box.

The senior lofted a shot over the goalkeeper’s head to give Southern a  1-0 lead.

A few minutes later Gadd streaked down the left side of the field, crossing to Annie Ware, who one-touched the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Mikki Clark gave Southern a 3-0 lead, scoring on a play similar to Gadd’s goal.

Clark had the ball in the middle of the field, turned and sent a high shot over the goalkeeper’s head for the score.

Southern goalkeeper Kristyn Murphy kept the shutout going at halftime with a big save.

Late in the half Lincoln County had a free kick just outside the penalty box.

Murphy got a hand on the ball to bat it away, then smothered the ball for the save.

“She’s completely come out of her shell and is making unbelievable saves,” Cress said of Murphy, who has two shutouts and has allowed two goals this season, one on a penalty kick.

Gadd, Chesney Sipple and Karrigan Moberly each scored goals for Southern in the second half.

Southern plays at 6 p.m. Thursday at Somerset.

The game will be Somerset’s first of the season.
