Big win

Colonels open soccer season with 2-1 victory

RICHMOND — A well placed header and a friendly post helped the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team pick up a season opening victory against UNC Asheville.

Lauren Fant’s header broke a tie late in the first half and the Colonels pitched a shutout in the second half, beating the Bulldogs 2-1 Friday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.

In the 41st minute EKU’s Katie Bright earned a corner kick when her shot deflected off a UNC Asheville player.

Emily D’Italia launched the kick into the center of the box and Fant got her head on it, knocking the ball into the back of the net.

Right before halftime, the Bulldogs had an opportunity to tie the game when they were awarded a free kick deep in EKU territory.

EKU goalkeeper Erika Wolfer punched the ball away to keep the Colonels ahead at halftime.

With less than 17 minutes to play in the game, a UNC Asheville shot hit the post, denying the Bulldogs a chance to tie the game.

Wolfer had five saves in goal for the Colonels.

Each team had 14 shots, but EKU managed to slip two into the back of the net.

The Colonels took the lead early, scoring nine minutes into the game when Nikki Donnelly received a pass from Kristan Paynter and worked the ball left to right, going straight into the middle and blasting a shot on goal.

Donnelly’s shot deflected off a defender and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

UNC Asheville tied the game in the 28th minute on a goal by Kaitlyn Eckhart.

The Bulldogs had 11 shots in the first half, but were limited to three shots in the second half.

EKU next plays at 1 p.m. Sunday at home against Robert Morris.

Was Eastern Kentucky University justified in agreeing to a $400,000 salary plus benefits, including a housing allowance, for incoming president Michael Benson?

Yes. Benson is a proven fundraiser and institutional leader. Bringing him to EKU will pay enormous dividends. Also, his salary will still be less than that of Western Kentucky University’s president and is comparable to what other successful schools are paying their presidents.
No. With EKU giving only modest, if any, pay raises to faculty/staff, offering buyouts, planning layoffs and elimination of programs, paying the president that much can’t be justified, no matter how good he is. How can he ask others to sacrifice when he will be making $400,000.
I don't care.
