BEREA —
Adam Coleman earned his first victory as head coach of the Berea Community football team in last year’s season opener at Trimble County.
The second year coach looks to make it 2-0 against the Raiders when Trimble County visits Berea at 8 p.m. tonight.
Berea won last year’s game 19-8, forcing two turnovers while not committing any.
The Pirates led 13-0 at halftime, before Trimble County cut the lead to 13-8 in the third quarter.
Berea put the game away on a 58-yard scoring strike from quarterback Darious Whitaker to receiver Eli Woodie.
Whitaker, who had a hand in two of Berea’s three touchdowns against Trimble County, graduated in the spring and will be replaced this season by a freshman, Deondre Tate.
While Tate is lacking varsity experience, the rest of the team is not.
“We have nine seniors,” Coleman said. “All nine seniors contributed in some way shape or form last year.”
Among the returners are senior running backs Zach Cunningham and Hunter Wilson, who each rushed for more than 700 yards last season.
Also back is senior tailback Devin Hester, who rushed for more than 500 yards a season ago.
Woodie, a senior, is joined at the receiver slot by another senior, Justin Sandefur.
A key area will be the line, where Berea lost two starters to graduation.
Despite lacking all-around experience, the Pirates are not lacking in size.
Senior Daniel Hubbard is listed at 6-6, 310.
Hubbard will be joined on the line by junior Robert Smith (5-11, 285), sophomore Sam Shearer (5-10, 205), senior Robert Reed (5-8, 190), junior Christian Spiller (6-1, 240), senior Derrick Blanke (5-9, 245) and senior Joey Rister (5-10, 225).
During the preseason the Pirates took on Atherton and Newport.
Coleman said he was happy with the way the Pirates responded during the scrimmages, especially against a physical Newport squad.
Last season Berea went 4-7 overall and 1-2 in district, losing in the first round of the Class A playoffs, 35-12 at Harlan.
Goals are much higher this year, with Berea wanting to compete for the district title and earn the right to host a state playoff game, Coleman said.
