Golfers tee it up again for Mike’s Kids

RICHMOND — Last Wednesday, 17 four-person teams teed it up at Arlington in the annual Mike’s Kids Education Foundation Golf Scramble.

It was a wonderful day for golf with no rain and not too hot to enjoy the day.

Stepping into the winner’s circle was the team of Ben Fritz, Rodney Renfro, Derrick Kaiser and Greg Cherry. They shot a 14-under-par 58 to notch the win.

Taking second place was the team of Jey Marks, Jeremy Steele, Steve Greenwell and Aaron Raider with 59. Third place was Ricky and Ronnie Terrill, Jeremiah Duerson and Hubert Broaddus with a 59 also, but losing on the scorecard matchup.

After play, the golfers assembled at the Mule Barn and enjoyed a delicious buffet provided by Outback Steakhouse. Lisa Caudill then presented the winners their prizes and expressed her gratitude to the players and sponsors for making this event a success.

There were four more teams entered this year than the 13 teams playing in 2010 so this event is getting more popular. This Foundation was created in honor of Billy Michael Caudill who was superintendent of Madison County Schools from July 2001 to December 2007.

Prior to this tournament, the foundation had already given five $1,000 scholarships to Madison Central and Madison Southern students. They also had given $25,000 in literacy grants to Madison County teachers as well.

Mike Caudill believed every student had the ability to succeed if he or she were given the right tools, and this foundation is trying it’s best to see that happen.

Hats off to all you good people for helping Mike’s dream come true.

Roy Kidd’s first hole-in-one

Legendary EKU coach Roy Kidd had his first hole-in-one at age 79 while playing in the Dawahares Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame golf outing at Griffin Gate in Lexington June 23.

He aced the No. 4 hole using a 7 iron while playing with friends Bob, John and Joe Roberts. The hole-in-one was witnessed by KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett who called it a “pretty cool moment.”

He said he hadn’t seen Roy so excited since the time he beat a great Western team in football while coaching at EKU.

I also should mention that Roy is a member of the KHSAA Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to you, Roy, on a great shot at the right time.

Wow! Better late than never!

You da man!

Firecracker Scramble at Berea

Thirty-eight players took to the links at Berea Country Club Sunday in the annual Firecracker Scramble.

Taking the checkered flag with a 53 was the team of Colby Brown, Aaron Cash, Brenda Pridemore, Jeff Sandifur and Charlie Homa. In second place with at great 56, was Larry Sandifur, Garland and Margaret Farmer, Glen Reed, Danny Issacs and Mark Woodlee.

Chairwoman Nikki Layne fed the golfers afterward with a wonderful selection of deli cold cuts and salads. Birthday cake was served for dessert to honor Barbara Belcher on her birthday.

Happy birthday, Barbara, and a salute to Nikki on a job well done.

Rambling

My friend Dick Ham has taken time off from Bubba and Blondes to spy on my golf game.

Well, Dick, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If I learn from my mistakes I will soon be a scratch golfer!

Tom Watson said, “Winning does not breed winning, losing breeds winning.  When I lose, I practice more and am more determined to not let it happen again.  That’s how I became a champion.”

I think I will follow Tom’s advice.

Mahalo!
