H.S. FOOTBALL: Eagles blank Lynn Camp

RICHMOND — Sophomore running back Damien Harris rushed for five touchdowns and the Madison Southern football team recorded its first shutout since 2005, beating Lynn Camp 47-0 Friday night on the road.

Harris unofficially had 385 rushing yards playing in his first game of the season.

He missed the first game with an elbow injury.

Southern (1-1) had gone 68 games since last recording a shutout, when it beat Knox Central 21-0 on Sept. 23, 2005.

The Eagles went 9-3 that season, advancing to the second round of the state tournament.

“Defensively we played well,” Southern coach Jon Clark said of the Lynn Camp game. “Lynn Camp throws the ball around a little bit and we got after the quarterback, got some sacks and forced some turnovers.”

Southern, which didn’t punt the entire game, turned the ball over on downs its first drive, before taking off on offense and building a 21-0  lead at halftime.

“We had an 11-play drive and we turned it over on downs,” Clark said. “From there we just clicked.”

Quarterback Adam Simpson and running back Buddy Harrison added rushing touchdowns for the Eagles.

Harris, though, stole the show, running wild against Lynn Camp.

“He ran pretty well tonight. He’s rusty, but for his first game back he ran very well,” Clark said. “He’s bigger than he was last year (Harris is up from 185 to 205 pounds) and he’s breaking tackles, instead of just making people miss.”

Harrison was filling in on offense and defense for injured players.

“Buddy played well on offense and defense,” Clark said. “He stepped up and played both ways.”

Simpson passed for around 70 to 90 yards with no interceptions, Clark said. Matt Howard also had an interception for the Eagles.

Southern plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Wayne County.
