Southern looks for three-peat
Madison Southern will begin its hunt for a third-straight girls soccer district title today at Madison Central High School.
The Lady Eagles will take on Berea Community at 8 p.m. Madison Central, the No. 1 seed, will take on Model at 6 p.m.
Southern defeated Central 2-1 on penalty kicks in last year’s district tournament championship game. The Lady Eagles have won three of the past four district titles (2011, 2010 and 2008).
Southern defeated Berea earlier this season, 5-1, on the road.
Central has not won a district title since 2007, but comes into the tournament with a six-game winning streak and a seven-game shutout streak. The Lady Indians have not allowed a goal in more than a month (Sept. 6 against Anderson County).
Central rolled to a 10-0 win over Model on Sept. 4 in Richmond.
The winners advance to the title game, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday.
All games will be played at the new turf field at the Madison Central Athletic Complex.
Local teams look to reclaim district title
No Madison County team has won a district volleyball title in six years (Madison Southern in 2006).
That will change this year.
With Bryan Station now in the 42nd District, the 44th District championship this year will be a three-team battle between Berea Community, Madison Southern and Madison Central.
The two-day tournament gets under way with Madison Southern and Berea Community taking the court at 6 p.m. today at Berea Community school. The winner will take on top-seeded Central Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Madison Southern took on Berea twice during the regular season (Aug. 28 and Sept. 24) and picked up two easy wins. The first meeting was a battle, with the Lady Eagles picking up a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) win. Southern won the second match relatively easily, 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-9).
Central earned the No. 1 seed by sweeping both meetings with both Southern and Berea without dropping a set.
Central has not won a district title since 2005.
