H.S. HOOPS: Southern tops Frankfort, Berea falls at home to Paris

MADISON COUNTY — The Madison Southern (16-10) Eagles finished up the regular season Friday with a 72-50 win on the road over Frankfort.

After sitting through Frankfort’s Senior Night and Homecoming activities, the Eagles came out sluggish in the first half and trailed Frankfort by one at the break.

“We missed some shots we normally hit. We were kind of sluggish and didn’t play so well,” Southern coach Shane Buttry said.

But the second half, Southern’s patented pressure defense came to life and jump-started the offense. The Eagles ran out to a third-quarter lead that they never gave up.

“The second half we got after them a little bit more. We pressed them, jumped them and trapped guys all over the place and created some turnovers,” Buttry said. “They had 27 turnovers in the game and we only had nine. We’ve got to go up and down for us to be successful.”

Senior Tyler Abshear once again led the way for the Eagles with 29 points. Two other Eagles finished in double figures as well. Mike Rothermel added 16 points and Drew Taylor had 14. Damien Harris had seven points, Jake Napier had four and Spencer Stone had two points and nine rebounds.

“Spencer is just a garbage guy,” Buttry said. “He’s in there to play good defense and he’s going to pick up some offensive rebounds and keep the ball alive and get buckets that way.”

Southern plays Model on Thursday in the 44th District Tournament.

Paris 63, Berea 62

The Berea Community Pirates lost a close one in their home finale Friday as they fell to Paris, 63-62.

Paris grabbed a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 19-14.

The Greyhounds outscored the Pirates 13-10 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 32-24 at the half.

Berea fought back and outscored Paris 18-15 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 47-45 after three quarters and outscored the Grayhounds 20-16 in the fourth quarter, but fell one point short.

Daniel Hubbard had a big game, finishing with 23 points in his final home game. He also pulled down six rebounds.

Trey Terrill also finished in double figures with 13 points as did Andy Allen, who finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Bradley Adkins added eight points, while Nolan Sweet and Eli Woodie chipped in with three points each and Dustin Kates had two points.

The Pirates take on Madison Central in the 44th District Tournament on Tuesday.
