H.S. HOOPS: Central’s Hawkins picks up another award

RICHMOND — Dominique Hawkins picked up yet another very prestigious postseason honor on Thursday.

The Madison Central senior point guard was named the Gatorade Kentucky Boys’ Basketball Player of the year.

Hawkins was recently named the Bluegrasspreps.com Player of the Year and earlier this month he was named one of five finalists for the annual Kentucky Mr. Basketball Award.

He was also named a McDonald’s All-American candidate.

The point guard had a tremendous senior season.

He averaged 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals a game. He shot 50 percent from the field, 35 percent from three-point range and was a 75 percent free throw shooter.

Earlier this season, Hawkins surpassed Aaron Morris’ program record for points (1,980) and then became the first male player in school history to score more than 2,000 points.

The senior led the Indians to an 18th-straight 44th District Tournament last month, then was named the 11th Region Tournament MVP after Central defeated Lexington Catholic to capture the team’s first Sweet 16 appearance since 2006.

At the state tournament, Hawkins scored 107 points in four games and after he scored 21 points and brought down 10 rebounds in the title game against Ballard, the senior was named the Sweet 16 MVP.

Hawkins is drawing interest from Kentucky, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee, among other schools.
