RICHMOND —
The Berea Community Lady Pirates (2-1) downed Model Laboratory (0-1) 10-4 Tuesday in cold, windy conditions much more suited for football than softball.
Model pitcher Grace Weitcamp and Berea pitcher Jenny Ingram both turned in gritty complete-game performances despite the conditions.
Ingram, who is 2-1 on the season, recorded eight strikeouts in the game, while Weitcamp, who fell to 0-1, had three strikeouts in the game.
Berea Coach Rick Ingram said he was pleased with how his young team has performed thus far.
“I am happy. We had six spots to fill from last year, so we have a lot of young players out here, but they played pretty well, especially in these conditions,” Ingram said. “They are a little bit better than I thought we would be because we are so young. My expectations weren’t very high. Now I think we might have a little better team than I thought we might have.”
Berea jumped on top early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Lady Pirates loaded the bases on two hits, a wild pitch and a walk. Miranda Montgomery brought in all three with a hard single to right field to put Berea up 3-0.
Holly Musick followed with a double to right center field scoring Montgomery. She later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
The Lady Pirates added another run in the bottom of the second. Ally Maynard drew a walk to open the inning. She moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout. On the next pitch, Maynard sprinted down the third base line, drawing a throw from the Model catcher. When the ball went to third, Maynard sprinted home, scoring under the tag to make it 6-0.
Trailing 7-1 in the fourth inning, the Model bats finally came to life.
Lauren Stapp drove in Model’s second run of the game with a line-drive single to right. The next batter, Haley Hunt singled, stole second and moved to third on a walk. Kasi Schnied brought Stapp home with an infield single to make it 7-3. Hunt later scored on an error to cut the lead to 7-4.
Model coach Amy Kaylor said she liked the fight she saw from her team, which not only was playing its first game, it was the first time the entire team had been on the field at the same time.
“I’m very proud. We fought back and didn’t give up, which is something different from last year. We would have given up in the first inning, so I’m proud of them for fighting back,” Kaylor said.
Berea rounded out the scoring, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kaylor said she was pleased with the play of everyone on the team, especially Weitcamp and Stapp.
“Everybody did very well today. I’m very proud of Grace, she did a good job on the mound and Lauren Stapp hit well and played well in the field. They exceeded my expectations a lot and in this cold weather it is hard to do,” Kaylor said. “This team is going to struggle this year. They have a lot to learn and a lot of hard work ahead of them, but they’ve already come so far. You show your most improvement from your first game to the second. I can not wait to play our second game to see how well we improve from today.”
The Lady Pirates will be back in action Friday when they travel to Powell County.
