RICHMOND —
The nightmare began early for Eastern Kentucky University and didn’t let up until the final horn sounded.
EKU made just four shots in the first half Saturday against Morehead State and went into halftime with only 12 points.
The second half didn’t get much better for the Colonels, who fell to the Eagles 58-45 at McBrayer Arena.
For the game, the Colonels shot 30.6 percent from the field and 29.6 percent from three-point range.
“We had some missed opportunities, but Morehead deserves some credit,” EKU coach Jeff Neubauer said. “We had some good looks on threes that I would want our shooters taking every time, that we didn’t convert. Around the rim we had some putback opportunities where we missed some two-footers.”
EKU (14-13 overall, 6-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference) began the game one-of-seven from the field, but matched Morehead State defensively and trailed 6-3 through the first five minutes.
The Colonels, behind a jumper by Jaron Jones and a three-pointer by Jeff Allgood, took an 8-6 lead with 12:29 remaining in the half.
EKU scored just four points the rest of the half and went into the break down 19-12.
In the first half the Colonels were four-of-24 (16.7 percent) from the field and two-of-15 (13.3 percent) from three-point range.
No Colonel made more than one shot in the first half and three players — Mike DiNunno, Jones and Allgood — shared the scoring lead with three points each.
EKU, though, held Morehead State (14-13, 7-6 OVC) to seven-of-22 (31.8 percent) shooting and forced eight turnovers to stay within seven points.
“I think our first-half defense may have been our best defensive half of the year,” Neubauer said. “We really did a good job doubling the post and scrambling and recovering, but we didn’t take advantage of that great defensive effort.”
EKU continued to struggle offensively in the second half.
Morehead State, meanwhile, began to heat up, using an 18-7 run to open a 37-19 lead.
EKU never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
The Colonels had just 35 points with 1:05 remaining, but scored 10 points in the final 65 seconds.
Jaron Jones was a bright spot for EKU.
The senior was six-of-nine from the field, three-of-three from three-point range and five-of-six from the free throw line, scoring a game-high 20 points.
The rest of the team shot nine-of-40 (22.5 percent) from the field and five-of-22 (22.7 percent) from three-point range.
“We had a lot of missed shots,” Jones said. “We were getting looks, we just weren’t knocking them down. We had a good defensive game, we just couldn’t score.”
Joshua Jones added nine points, Eric Stutz had four points and DiNunno, Allgood, Jeff Johnson and Timmy Knipp each had three points.
EKU plays Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Tennessee Tech.
