H.S. FOOTBALL: No. 4 Scott County tops short-handed Central, 41-16

GEORGETOWN — Even if the Indians had been at full strength, it still would have been a major challenge to go on the road Friday and knock off No. 4 Scott County.

But, they weren’t.

Madison Central was without its three starting interior offensive linemen and also its top wide receiver/defensive back (Ken-Jah Bosley). In addition, the Indians had their best offensive threat (senior Dominique Hawkins) suffer an injury on the opening drive of the game.

Scott County (3-1) took advantage and rolled to a 41-16 win at home over the Indians (2-1). The Cardinals racked up 336 yards rushing and intercepted Central quarterback Hunter Stocker three times.

“I feel like if we go over there at full strength, then we beat them,” Central coach Bert Browne said. “When you’ve got five offensive starters out of the game, it’s tough.”

Bosley had nine catches for 228 yards and two touchdowns in a win last week over Mercer County, but the senior suffered a heat-related incident in practice and was held out of the game for medical reasons.

Without Bosley, Central’s offense generated a season-low 247 total yards.

Hawkins had to leave the field several times and did not see much action on defense. The senior did finish with 60 yards on 11 rushes.

“He was about 60 percent,” Browne said of Hawkins.

Stocker finished as the team’s leading rusher, gaining 65 yards on 15 carries. The senior quarterback had a 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Junior tailback Caleb McClurg had Central’s only other touchdown, a 26-yard run in the opening minutes of the second half.

The Indians’ only other points came on a 22-yard field goal from Ben Durhman in the second quarter.

“We just couldn’t get it done,” Browne said.

Kevo Edwards paced the Scott County offense, racking up 129 yards rushing and one touchdown on 11 carries. Dierrius Dumphord had three TDs runs and finished with 78 yards on 16 carries.

Quarterback Clay McKee was four-of-six for 85 yards.

Scott County scored on the opening drive of the game, going 49 yards on four plays, leading to a Dumphord TD run.

Central cut the lead to 7-3 on the first play of the second quarter, but Scott County found the end zone twice more before the end of the half — once on a McKee run and the other on a Dumphord run.

Central scored on the opening drive of the second half. Will Nash caught a 38-yard pass and McClurg then scored to cut the lead to 21-10.

The Cardinals responded with two third-quarter TDs to stretch the lead to 35-10.

Stocker was five-of-16 for 96 yards. The Indians were just 2-of-12 on third downs.

Central has lost six straight to Scott County, a streak that stretches back to 1999.

The Indians are set to return to action Friday at Lexington Catholic.
