The Madison Southern girls soccer team keeps finding ways to win.
Dakota Gadd scored an early goal and the Southern defense held on to shutout Lafayette 1-0 Thursday night at home.
Southern is now 9-0 on the season and has its outscored opponents 55-4.
Five minutes into the game, Gadd got the ball in the middle of the field and carried the ball 20 yards, before working open and blasting a long shot into the corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The defense took over from there, earning the Lady Eagles’ sixth shutout of the season.
With 22:20 left in the first half, Lafayette had a free kick just outside the penalty box, but Southern goalkeeper Kristyn Murphy made the save, as the Lady Eagles went into halftime up 1-0.
Lafayette never threatened in the second half until the final minutes when the Generals’ Rachel Roberts got past the Southern defense for a 1-on-1 with Murphy.
Murphy cut off the angles and forced a bad shot, smothering the ball to ensure the shutout.
Southern plays at 6 p.m. Tuesday at North Laurel.
Berea Community 4, Pulaski County 4
The Lady Pirates trailed three times Thursday against Pulaski County on the road, but they kept battling back.
Tonya Renzenbrink scored twice in the second half as Berea Community rallied for a 4-4 tie in Somerset. Taylor Powell and Sydney Sandefur all had goals for the Lady Pirates (7-1-1).
“We hadn’t played in more than a week,” Berea coach Jerry Bingham said. “We were a little rusty.”
Pulaski County took a 1-0 lead just 1:14 into the game. Powell pulled Berea even, then Sandefur connected on a penalty kick to give the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead.
Pulaski County scored twice more in the first half, but Renzenbrink scored with three minutes left before the half to tie the score again.
The Lady Maroons once again took the lead, but Renzenbrink scored with 4:26 left in the game off an assist from Sandefur.
Berea had several chances to get the winning goals in the final minutes but was unable to capitalize.
The Lady Pirates are set to return to action Monday at Model.
Mercer County 10, Model 0
The Model Laboratory girls soccer team suffered a 10-0 loss at home Thursday to Mercer County.
Ryle 4, Berea 0
The Pirates suffered a 4-0 loss to Ryle Thursday at home.
The loss drops Berea Community to 2-6 on the season.
The Pirates are set to return to action at 3:30 p.m. in the Berea Cup.
