H.S. SPORTS: Shepherd named Second-Team All-State

RICHMOND — Madison Southern senior Jackie Shepherd was recently named Second-Team Class AA All-State by the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association.

Shepherd helped the Lady Eagles win 14 games this season, the third-most in school history, and led the team to a district runner-up finish.

The senior is the first Southern volleyball player to ever earn all-state honors.

Shepherd led the team in kills and blocks in each of the past two seasons. This season she had 208 kills and 105 blocks.

The senior finished her career second on the school’s all-time kills list (476) and third on the blocks list (105).

Hawkins and Parks named to All-Star team

A pair of Madison Central standouts were recently selected to play in the 2012 Best of the Bluegrass All-Star Game.

Seniors Dominique Hawkins and Brandon Parks were named to the Kentucky Team, which will take on a squad of Louisville All-Stars team, which will be selected by the Greater Louisville Football Coaches Association.

The All-Star game is scheduled for Dec. 9 at St. Xavier High School.

Hawkins was selected to the team as a defensive back. The senior has more than a 1,000 yards rushing this season and has 18 total touchdowns (rushing and receiving).

He has 17 tackles on the season.

Parks, a defensive lineman, has developed into a dominant defensive force for the Indians the past two seasons. The senior has 50 tackles on the season, 13 tackles for loss and has blocked five kicks.

He also has three fumble recoveries on the season.

Central finished the regular season 6-4 and will take on DuPont Manual Friday night in the opening round of the Class 6A Playoffs in Richmond.

Browne to be assistant coach at Border Bowl

Madison Central coach Bert Browne will serve as an assistant coach for the Kentucky Team at this year’s annual Border Bowl.

The game, which features standout football players from Kentucky playing against standouts from Tennessee, is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at the University of the Cumberlands.

The Kentucky team will be coached by Tom Larkey (Harlan County) and Joe Prince (Owensboro) who will be the assistant head coach. Other assistant coaches include Ovie Canady (Harlan County), Chris Larkey (North Laurel), Tony Saylor (Rockcastle County), Mike Holcolmb (Breathitt County), Mike Croley (Bellevue), Mike Jackson (Ballard) and Shawn Thompson (Wayne County).

A full roster for the Kentucky team has not yet been announced.
