H.S. FOOTBALL: Eagles want to head into playoffs on a positive note

BEREA — The Eagles will play host to Perry County Central in the first round of the Class 5A Playoffs, but they still have unfinished business.

Madison Southern is set to take on Garrard County today in the regular-season finale.

Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Lancaster.

The Eagles (6-3, 4-1 district) bounced back from tough loss to Pulaski County three weeks ago with a pair of wins that locked up second place in the district.  

Southern defeated North Laurel 26-10 and then last week posted the team’s second shutout of the season — a 56-0 win over South Laurel on the road.

The Eagles opened up the flood gates with their talented backfield. Four players rushed for more than 100 yards and six players found the end zone.

As astonishing as the Eagles’ rushers have performed this season, Southern has developed an efficient passing attack and has allowed only one sack all year.

“Our offensive line is led by a great group of seniors and Adam Simpson, our quarterback, has done a great job of being collective and getting the ball to our wide receivers,” Southern coach Jon Clark said.

The Southern defense has been on the field for extended periods of time this season because the team’s offense has been able to score so quickly.

Still, Southern is allowing only 18 points a game.

“Our defense is finding the ball better,” Clark said. “We are in the backfield making plays instead of allowing seven to eight yards. We are pushing teams back.”

The Eagles are led by sophomore Damien Harris who continues to break school records with 36 touchdowns and more than 1,800 yards on the season.

Despite his accomplishments the backfield is full of big-game performers like s Coty Russell, Buddy Harrison and Wes Proctor, who all contribute to the Eagles’ high-scoring offense.

Last season, the Eagles fell short to the Golden Lions.

In the past year, the Eagles have been successful in avenging losses to Powell County, Southwestern, Lincoln County and South Laurel.

Madison Southern has never defeated Garrard County, so the Eagles are looking to add one more accomplishment the 17 school records they’ve set on the season.

The Eagles backfield goes up against a stingy Garrard County defense which is led by Justice Lyon — who leads the team in fumble recoveries and interceptions. The Golden Eagles allow only 113 rushing yards per game and rely heavily on running back Noah Williams, who averages more than 21 carries a game and more than 100 yards.

Williams is also joined by a host of running backs who play big roles in the team’s offense.

“They are a well-coached program,” Clark said. “They are great up front and at controlling the clock. They have gotten better as the season has progressed.”
