H.S. FOOTBALL: Pirates can earn home playoff game with strong finish

BEREA — The Pirates will travel to Campbellsville tonight for what could be a very big district showdown.

Berea Community (2-6, 0-2 district) still has the opportunity to play host to a home playoff game if there ends up being a three-way tie for second place in the district.

For that to happen, the Pirates would have to beat Campbellsville and Williamsburg would have to top Lynn Camp.

That would leave Camp-bellsville, Lynn Camp and Berea tied at 1-2 in the district standings.

In that scenario, total wins would be the tiebreaker, meaning the Pirates would likely have to win their regular-season finale next week at home against Paintsville.

“Basically we control our own destiny,”  Berea coach Adam Coleman said. “We win out and we can finish second in the district.”

Berea Community (2-6 0-2 district) lost last week to district leader Williamsburg, 47-12, at home despite starting off the game a kickoff return for a TD.

“Everything was working,” Coleman said.

Williamsburg got a late touchdown late in the second quarter and took a 21-6 lead into halftime.

The Pirates fumbled away their first possession of the second half, which set the stage for four touchdowns for Williamsburg in the third quarter that would blow the game open.

The Pirates are led by Hunter Wilson, who leads the team in both yardage and touchdowns. Last week against the Yellow Jackets, he broke several runs of 50-plus yards.

“We can score points, our biggest problem is we are putting our defense in short-field positions,” Coleman said. “When we eliminate these mistakes we can enjoy a great deal of success.

Campbellsville, like Berea is going through changes. The Eagles are thin on the line and have a new coach. They lost several contributors on the line and looking for play-makers to fill in the voids.

Game time is set for 8 p.m.

The Eagles won seven games last season, finished in second place in the district and advanced to the second round of the Class A Playoffs.

This year, they’ve won just two games, including last week’s 48-6 win over Lynn Camp.

Campbellsville opened the season with five-straight losses, many by lopsided scores, highlighted by a 51-0 loss to Russell County. Until last week, the Eagles had allowed at least 30 points in every game this season.

Campbellsville has allowed 317 points this season, the fourth-most among Class A schools in the state.

Last year, the Eagles defeated the Pirates 47-8 in Berea.
