H.S. GIRLS SOCCER: Henry Clay holds off Central

VERSAILES — The Lady Indians put together a much better effort in the second half, but couldn’t overcome an early deficit Tuesday in the opening round of the 11th Region Tournament in Versailles.

Emily Willoughby scored with just more than two minutes left in the game as Henry Clay held on for a 2-1 win.

The Lady Blue Devils advance to take on Lexington Catholic in Thursday’s semifinals. The Lady Indians finish the season with a 17-3-1 record.

Henry Clay got on the board 10 minutes into the game, scoring off a corner kick.

With junior standout Maryssa Stewart drawing the focus of the Henry Clay defense, the Lady Indians weren’t able to get their first good scoring chance until the closing minutes of the first half.

The lead remained at 1-0 until shortly after halftime when the Lady Blue Devils scored on a breakaway.

Central senior Samantha Shepherd made a series of good saves to keep her team in the game.

Willoughby got Central back in the game late, scoring on a shot from the left side that found the right corner of the net.
