RICHMOND —
Brandon Simpson bowled a true 300 score on the way to winning the $500 first-place prize money in the Galaxy no-tap tournament on Aug. 5.
In addition to regular strikes, nine pins down with the first ball in a frame counts as a strike in no-tap competition.
Simpson did not need the benefit of the enhanced scoring pattern during the third game of his series as he rolled 12 consecutive regular strikes for a perfect game. He added a no-tap 300 game and finished with a pin count of 1,431 for five games.
Bowlers with an average of less than 200 in a 10-pin league were granted a handicap of 100 percent of the difference between their averages and 200 for this tournament. Simpson received no handicap.
A field of 30 bowlers rolled five games each on five pairs of lanes during this event.
Tom Roth finished second with a handicapped total of 1,348 and collected $100.
Audrey Davis placed third with a score of 1,305, Terry Jackson was fourth at 1,280 and Michelle Poynter Ambrose was fifth at 1,274.
The bowlers finishing in the third through fifth places received $20 cash and a gift package of goods and services from local businesses.
David Norman bowled two no-tap 300 games and Jeff Napier one no-tap 300 game. Sue Hegelmeyer rolled the top women’s game at 278.
League bowlers shine in golf scramble
The results of the Galaxy golf scramble on Aug. 4 were reported in his inimitable style by Glenmore Jones in his Aug. 7 column in the Register.
I will not repeat this information, but I want to recognize the accomplishments of four Galaxy league bowlers in this scramble.
Gary Kerns and Harvey Poynter were members of the runner-up team. Jeff Napier took closest to the pin honors on No. 6 as did Mark Daly on No. 17.
Congratulations to these bowlers/golfers!
MCWBA meeting

Completing the list of top five teams were: Husband and Wife (Amy and Jeff Sadler), Low Rollers (Kymmi and Bill Bowles), Gutter Kings (Jason Johnson and David Robinson) and Double D (Don Brumfield and Dean Acker).
The top individual performances in this league are recognized in today’s column. Scores in no-tap leagues are higher than in regular leagues because, in addition to regular strikes, nine pins down with the first ball in a frame counts as a strike.
