H.S. HOOPS: Shearer scores 1,000th point as Berea rolls

BEREA — Berea senior Sophia Shearer scored her 1,000th career point and the Lady Pirates led from start to finish Friday night at home, beating Campbellsville 58-42.

Shearer scored a game-high 12 points, netting her 1,000th point in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Pirates jumped out to an 11-3 lead and remained in front 15-13 after one quarter.

By halftime, Berea led 26-21.

The Lady Pirates outscored Campbellsville 19-12 in the third quarter to go up 45-33, and won the scoring battle in the fourth quarter, 13-9.

Berea coach Jerry Bingham said turnovers have hurt his team all season — the Lady Pirates had 35 in a loss Tuesday to Bath County — but on Friday Berea committed just eight turnovers, despite a constant press by Campbellsville.

“We really did a good job taking care of the basketball,” Bingham said. “For the first time this year our girls played really well under pressure.”

The Lady Pirates got 20 points from the bench and had eight different players score at least two points.

“Overall, it was our best performance of the year,” Bingham said. “We finally put a full game together. It was a nice win.”

Ashley Sizemore added 10 points. Hannah Haycraft had nine, Victoria Sexton eight, Chase Fain and Taylor Winstead scored six apiece, Brooke Coccari had five and Miranda Montgomery scored two.

Berea (9-12) returns to action today at noon against Augusta in the Bluegrass Conference Challenge at Nicholas County High School.

Madison Central’s 10-game wining streak came to an end at the hands of DuPont Manual Friday night in the Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine University.

The Lady Indians fell behind early and never recovered, losing by 25 points.

DuPont Manual led 16-10 after one quarter and 38-20 at halftime.

The Lady Crimsons led 64-33 heading into the final period.

For the game, DuPont Manual shot 57 percent from the field, while Central shot 43 percent.

Dupont Manual won the battle of the boards, 36-24 and scored 25 points off 13 Central turnovers.

“Our kids played hard,” said Central coach Robbie Cooksey. “It’s a different level. It was like playing a college team. We weren’t able to handle their quickness.”

Kristen Congleton led Central with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Congleton was six-of-nine from the field.

Point guard Larryn Brooks, who was double-teamed most of the game, had 11 points and four assists.

Ashton Feldhaus added nine points and five rebounds. Ashley Hinkle had six points, Chrystal Miller had five, Heather Hinkle had three and Bailey O’Bryan scored two points.
