RICHMOND —
Tony Santiago and Mitchell Santiago each scored a goal as Madison Southern picked up a solid 2-0 victory at home Thursday over Woodford County.
Kyle Dickhaus made seven saves and earned the shutout for the Eagles (5-3-1).
“It was a good win for us,” Southern coach Ron Horn said. “We played really well from beginning to end. We were finally able to put a couple in the back of the net.”
Mitchell Santiago gave Southern the lead when he scored off a pass from Tyler Conley with just four minutes left before halftime.
With 20 minutes left in the second half, A.J. Jeck was fouled in the box. Tony Santiago converted on the penalty kick to give the Eagles a two-goal lead.
Southern had eight scoring chances in the first half, but just five shots in the second half as Woodford started to get some offensive pressure.
The Eagles are set to return to action at 10 a.m. at Oneida Baptist.
Berea Community 2, Pulaski County 2
The Berea boys soccer team fought Pulaski County to a 2-2 tie Thursday night at home.
The Pirates (3-4-3) nearly started by playing from behind. A foul called against Berea in the box gave the Maroons (5-3-1) a penalty kick, but keeper Ben Miller knocked the attempt away.
Midway through the half, Major McGraw broke the tie with a goal, but the Maroons got the equalizer with a goal with just four minutes left in the half.
Just before the break, the Pirates re-took the lead. Isaac McFarland’s corner kick set up a Bradley Dean header for a 2-1 lead.
The lead held until 15 minutes left to play when Pulaski scored on a cross.
The Pirates get some time off before hosting the Berea Cup, which is set for Sept. 13 through 18.
Central falls at Danville
The Admirals struck first against Madison Central on Thursday and held on late to pick up a 4-3 win in Danville.
Danville (8-0) scored in the first two minutes to take a 1-0 lead. The Indians (3-3) settled down 15 minutes in when Coy Taylor found the equalizer.
The Admirals answered by scoring a pair of goals quickly and building a 3-1 lead. A goal from Steven Willoughby closed the game at 3-2 at halftime.
The second half saw more back-and-forth play before Willoughby got his second goal. The goal came courtesy of a penalty kick.
With a 3-3 tie appearing to be the final result, a tripped player on a corner kick gave the Admirals a penalty kick of their own. Danville scored on the attempt with six minutes left to play.
Central looks to bounce back next week when they take part in the Berea Cup.
