H.S. FOOTBALL: Berea falls to Bethlehem

RICHMOND — The Berea Community football team couldn’t overcome mistakes and injuries Friday night on the road, falling to Bethlehem 30-18.

Berea (1-2) and Bethlehem (2-1) were scoreless after one quarter.

Bethlehem took a 12-0 lead in the second quarter, before Berea responded with a six-yard scoring run by Zach Cunningham to cut the lead to 12-6.

Berea trailed 18-6 at halftime.

The Pirates came out in the second half and cut the margin to 18-12 on a seven-yard run by Cunningham.

After Bethlehem scored again, Berea pulled within 24-18 at the end of the third quarter on a five-yard run by Hunter Wilson.

“We kind of got on a roll and it looked like we were going to make some noise, but we didn’t tackle very well,” Berea coach Adam Coleman said.

“We forced some turnovers, but we had some turnovers and we didn’t catch the ball like we should have,” Coleman said.

The Pirates, who only have 26 players on the roster, suffered some key injuries and had to fill those spots with players playing out of position.

Berea, which struggled against the pass last week, spent this week concentrating on defending the pass, expecting Bethlehem to be pass happy.

Instead, Bethlehem hurt the Pirates with the run, Coleman said.

Robert Reed and Robert Smith each recovered fumbles for the Pirates.

Berea plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Nicholas County.
