Eagles, Pirates and Patriots all set to open play in Berea Invitational
Three Madison County teams will compete for a championship this weekend at the 2009 Berea Invitational Tournament.
The three-day event, which features Madison Southern, Model and Berea Community, gets under way today at Berea Community School.
The eight-team field will be divided into two pools. Pool 1 includes Berea, Model, Monticello and Estill County. Pool 2 includes Jackson County, Elliott County, Southern and Lynn Camp.
Madison Southern (2-1) will take Jackson County (1-2) at 6 p.m. today at the Singleton Gym, while Berea (2-1) and Model (2-1) will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the new gym.
On Friday, Berea will take on Monticello (1-2) at 6 p.m. in the Singleton Gym, Lynn Camp will face Southern at 6 p.m. in the new gym and Model will face Estill County at 7:30 p.m. in the new gym.
On Saturday, each team will play twice.
Model will take on Monticello at noon in the new gym, Southern will play Elliott County at 1:30 p.m. in the Singleton Gym and Berea will take on Estill County at 1:30 p.m. in the new gym.
The championship game, which will feature the top two teams from each bracket, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the new gym.
The third-place game is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the new gym. The fifth-place game will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Singleton Gym and the seventh-place game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Singleton Gym.
Admission is $6 per session.
Berea Community opened the season with back-to-back wins over Lynn Camp and Frankfort before falling to Owen County, 58-42, last weekend at the Wierwille Classic.
Model also won its first two games of the season, defeating Monticello and Henry County, then lost Tuesday at Powell County.
Madison Southern opened the season with a historic win over Madison Central, then defeated Dunbar at home before falling to Henry Clay at the Wierwille Classic.
In other action scheduled for today, Madison Central (1-3) will travel to Lexington to take on Lafayette at 8 p.m.
The Lady Indians (4-0) will take on Tates Creek in their home opener at 7:30 p.m. and the Berea Community girls team will hit the road for a match-up with Wolfe County (7:30 p.m.).
