Following Madison Central’s win over Middlesboro on Saturday, coach Robbie Cooksey wasn’t pleased with the performance of his team’s post players.
However, the Lady Indians easily reestablished a dominant presence on the interior behind the double-double performance of Brislyn Sizemore (11 points, 11 rebounds, including six offensive boards) as they rolled past Pendleton County Monday, 86-49.
“I was happy with how we played inside. It was a big improvement from our previous game, when we had an advantage but didn’t use it,” Cooksey said. “We took advantage of our size against Pendleton County and went to the boards. It was an effort for our bigger kids and they responded well.”
The Lady Indians (4-0) led, 44-22, at halftime. Jenna Cornelison had 10 points and three boards, Kaity Busch scored 11 points and seven rebounds and Ashton Feldhaus chipped in six points and eight rebounds.
Ashley Hinkel was 2-for-4 from three-point range and scored nine points and Christina Ciolek added nine points for the Lady Indians.
Central will return to action Thursday against Tates Creek. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Richmond.
Estill County 45, Berea 32
A big first-quarter surge helped the Lady Engineers pick up a win at home over Berea Community on Monday.
Estill County (2-0) outscored the Lady Pirates 24-2 in the first eight minutes of the game, then held on for a 45-32 win. Berea (1-2) outscored the Lady Engineers in the final three quarters, but could never get closer than nine points.
“They hit everything in the first quarter,” Berea coach Jerry Bingham said. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Sophia Shearer led Berea with 11 points, while Rachel Wilder added 10 points. Noah Short had six points, Chase Fain added three points and Brooke Coccari had two points.
The Lady Pirates were just 6-of-18 from the free throw.
Berea is set to return to action Thursday at Wolfe County.
