Lady Colonels look to extend winning streak
RICHMOND — Despite enjoying their longest winning streak in four years, the Lady Colonels certainly can’t get too complacent.
Eastern Kentucky University will definitely face a daunting task tonight, when they head to Morgantown, W.Va., to face West Virginia. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and the game’s audio and video feed will be available at MSNSportsNet.com.
Both the Lady Colonels and the Lady Mountaineers are currently riding long streaks. EKU has won four in a row, while West Virginia (7-1) has won five in a row.
The Lady Mountaineers have only lost to Ohio State (92-69) and topped Towson, who also faced EKU, 79-42, in their home opener in the preseason WNIT.
EKU (4-3, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) topped Towson, 54-50, in the Lady Pirate Invitational on Nov. 27.
Although EKU leads the all-time series, 2-0, it has been a long time since the two teams have faced each other. The last meeting was in 1981. WVU also holds a 1-4 overall record against Ohio Valley Conference teams.
The Lady Mountaineers are led by Liz Repella, a preseason All-Big East pick, who is averaging 14.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Asya Bussie contributes 12.6 and 6.6 boards per game and Korinne Campbell adds 10.4 points and a team-high 8.1 boards per game. The Lady Mountaineers average 70.4 points per game, while EKU averages 55.7 points. They also average 42.5 boards per game to EKU’s 39.1 and make just 17.5 turnovers to EKU’s 25.4 turnovers per game.
Alex Jones has been stepping up in a big way for EKU early this season. She picked up her second OVC Freshman of the Week award on Monday, and so far this season averages 11.3 points and 8.7 boards per game (both team-highs) and has had a double-double in the last two games.
Transfer Talisha Davis averages 10 points and a team-high 2.6 assists per game. Colette Cole adds 8.7 points and 5.6 boards per game and Cherie White also adds 6.7 points.
After a shaky start, the Lady Colonels rolled past their first weekend of OVC competition, topping Murray State, 58-54, and UT Martin, 56-53, on the road.
