Central, Model pick up wins
Despite poor free-throw shooting, the Madison Central girl’s basketball team rolled past Middlesboro, 86-47, in the Lady Indians’ home opener Saturday in Richmond.
Jenna Cornelison led Central (3-0) in scoring with 19 points and added seven rebounds, most of which came in the second half.
“She didn’t shoot the ball real well in the first half and was in some foul trouble,” Central coach Robbie Cooksey said. “We challenged her in the locker room to quit settling for threes and take the ball to the basket. She played a really solid second half.”
The Lady Indians were 12-of-24 from the free-throw line at halftime and 20-of-36 for the game.
“That’s not going to get it,” Cooksey said. “It’s something you have to be concerned about.”
Christina Ciolek added 12 points, Larryn Brooks scored 13, Ashton Feldhaus contributed nine and Erika Parks scored six for the Lady Indians. Because of foul trouble in the first half, everyone on the roster played. Cooksey said his team did not take advantage of their size in Saturday’s game.
“We thought we had a size advantage,” he said. “We’re settling too many times for three-pointers. When we have an advantage in the post and we’re not using it, it’s not good basketball. We still have a long way to go.”
Central will face Pendleton County on Monday on the road.
Model tops Lady Jaguars, 38-22
The Lady Patriots held West Jessamine to just two points in the third quarter as they were able to pick up a 38-22 win Saturday at the Lady Spartan Invitational at Sayre.
Model (1-3) trailed 14-12 at halftime, but outscored West Jessamine in the second half, 26-8.
“Our low score was due to missed shots but theirs was due to our defense,” Model coach Jamie Keene said. “We came out and picked up the pressure more in the second half. We put on some full-court pressure and some traps and began making shots.”
Model was led in scoring by Shelby McNeely, with 12 points, Shelby Schneid with 10 points and five steals, Tara Hill with five points, five steals and 15 rebounds and Emily Lowe with six points and six steals.
Model had 25 steals in Saturday’s contest. They will face Pulaski County Tuesday in Richmond.
Southern/Monticello canceled
Saturday’s scheduled matchup between Madison Southern and Monticello was cancelled.
The Lady Eagles (1-1) will return to action Monday against West Jessamine. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Berea.
