Defending champion Selby Wiggins once again stepped into the winner’s circle at the Madison Country Club in the men’s championship tournament.

He fired an even-par 72 in the rain-shortened 18-hole event to edge Jay Simmons (73) by one stroke. Randy Jewell was third with a 75.

The winners in the net division were: first place — Ricky Terrill, 70; second place — Jeremiah Duerson, 71 and third place — Rusty Williams.

The second flight results were: first place — Rusty Williams, 81; second place — Ricky Terrill, 82 and third place — Jeremiah Duerson, 83.

It was an end of the season event for the men’s league at the Madison Country Club. Club president Hubert Broaddus, who is also the chairman and sparkplug behind the men’s league, did another superb stimulus with the league this year in spite of the weather.

He had some great volunteer workers in Poochie McPeak and Susan Blevins. Club treasurer George Powell also has the computer system set up to keep track of handicaps.

You good people are a Godsend to the club.

Halloween party a blast

Last Saturday night, the ghosts and goblins showed up full force at the Madison Country Club for the annual Halloween Party.

Driving into the parking lot, which was lined with illuminated props, we were greeted by a black seven-feet Grim Reaper carrying the old scythe. It turned out to be Casey Settles, who won the top prize for scariest costume.

The upstairs at the club was rocking to the music of the Music Medics. There was an eight-foot tall Uncle Sam (Brian Settles) dancing with his five-foot Angel wife, Bridget. There were five or six ladies in sexy costumes dancing with the big bad wolf, Superman, Kotter and others. Doctor and Nurse Goodbody (Bruce and Lynn Lainhart) were dancing and I took a spin with my fortune teller wife, Carolyn, the Grim Reaper, Casey Settles and Minnie Pearl a.k.a. Nila Cheap.

It was a great party and fun to see everybody get out of character for just one night. The costumes and decorations this year were the best I have ever seen at this annual event. Committee chairs Daphne and Randy Jewell, with a big help from Jenny Harrison, Amy McMullen, Missy Hudson and Grace Robertson knocked themselves out to see that the scene was set for everyone to have a wonderful evening and they did!

Nancy Robertson donated a lot of the decorations for the party.

It was another successful team effort at the old fun club!

Rambling

A couple of weeks ago I went to visitation at the First Baptist for Ann Elkin Richardson.

So many people from Union City were there that I remarked to Carolyn that Union City must have a population of 10,000 people.

For the last 27 years, I have been pretty close to a lot of the folks there since I married one of their native daughters, Carolyn Allen. There are a lot of Allems there, plus in-laws, outlaws, cousins and friends. I have gotten to know the lifestyle of Union City pretty well. It reminds me a lot of the way Richmond was back in the 30s and 40s.

Back then our parents knew just about everyone in our end of town and were concerned about them. It was during the Depression and everyone who had anything shared it with the people who needed it. As a kid, I helped deliver a lot of meals to hungry people around us that my mother or grandmother fixed.

I have noticed the people in Union City seem to have that same mindset. If one of their friends is in need, the people and the church rush in to help. When one of their friends leaves this old world they show their support for the families left behind.

That is a great way to live and I think you good people of Union City have a great handle on the way life should be lived.
