Southern, Glenn Marshall students set to compete in world archery championships

Student-athletes from Madison Southern High School and Glenn Marshall Elementary will compete this weekend in the first-ever World National Archery in the School’s Program Tournament.

The event, which is being held at the Disney Wide World of Sports Jostens Center in Orlando, Fla., is expected to featured more than 2,000 participants from five countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africia.

“We expect the Kentucky teams to be very strong,” Southern coach Doug Carter said. “Six of the top 10 teams in the nation were from Kentucky. The (NASP) program started here and now its in a countries all over the world.”

The Madison Southern and Glenn Marshall teams both qualified for the international event by turning in solid performances in May at the national tournament in Louisville.

Southern placed 10th in the high school division, while Glenn Marshall was 30th in the elementary division.

Southern’s Lindsey Carr placed fourth in the high school girls division at the national championship. Zach Short, also of Southern, finished tied for eighth in the boys high school division and teammate Matt Dolen took 15th place.

Southern’s Brooklin Sarver was 43rd in the girls high school division and teammate Haley Carmen finished 38th.

Carr and Short both won scholarships at the national event and certainly could challenge for titles at the world championship.

Short graduated in June, but because world tournament invitation is based on last year’s national competition, team members who have graduated are still eligible to participate.

Short is taking a full course load at Eastern Kentucky University and working full-time on the third shift at the Tokico manufacturing plant in Berea.

An avid hunter who often bow hunts with his father and uncle, Short’s college major is wildlife management.

Carr, a senior at Southern, is considering enrolling in either EKU or Western Kentucky University next year and majoring in English.

“I want to attend a college that has an archery team, or at least an archery club,” she said.

Carr is active in numerous extracurricular activities, including the MSHS choir, mock trial team and band color guard, but archery is her only sport.

The World NASP Tournament will feature competition in three divisions — elementary, middle school and high school. Each participant will shoot 30 arrows, with a perfect score being a 300.

The Madison Southern and Glenn Marshall teams are scheduled to have 20 shooters each compete in the international event.

Southern is scheduled to shoot at 9:45 a.m. Friday.

The results of the event will not be released until some time on Saturday afternoon.

Members of the Madison Southern archery team include: Zach Short, John Peterson, Lindsey Carr, Haley Carman, Brooklin Sarver, Daedra Colwell, Christian Carter, Dalton Cain, Anthony McIntosh, Craig Hembree, Cody Taylor, Ashely Moore, Ramey Tompkins, Courtney Elam, Whitney Osborne, Amber Potts, Justin Lear, Matt Lakes and Robert Holliday

The team is coached by Doug Carter and Jeff Rogers.
