Stephens Shamble won by 43-under par 101
RICHMOND — Last Wednesday, Sept. 30, 61 golfers teed it up at The Bull in the rain-postponed Joseph Stephens Foundation Shamble.
The tourney had been slated for Sept. 26 but old Mother Nature said a resounding No!
The format for a shamble is the best drive of the four players is selected and each player then plays their own ball through completion of the hole. The two best balls of the foursome (using handicaps) are then recorded as your score for the hole. It is a fun format that keeps all the players involved.
Stepping into the winners circle at the end of a beautiful day on the links was the team of Ron Evans, Wes Griebel and Judd Patterson with a 43-under par 101. Wow! Second-place honors went to Al Tribble, Russ Tracy, Edwin Luxon and Greg Coyle with 102. Third place team was Tim, Nick and Nathan Stephens and Hameed Koury with a 103.
I played on a team with George Robbins, Jerry Foster and former EKU golfer Justin Moore. We finished fourth with a respectable 104. It was a blast watching Justin hit those 300-plus bombs and listening to all the jokes and verbal play-by-play of George, Jerry and Justin. Great day, mateys!
In the special events the winners were: Long drive for women — Pat Brandenburg; for the men — Bob Geiger; Closest to the pin on hole No. 4 for the ladies — Al Tribble (witnessed by George Robbins and Jerry Foster) and No. 17 Mandy Moore.
It was a great day of fun and golf on a beautiful golf course with plenty of refreshments and food. The main sponsors were Central Kentucky Surgery, Stephens Oil and Joni, Pat and Joseph Stephens.
This tournament is the brainchild of Dr. Hameed Koury, with proceeds going to the EKU Foundation. He had a lot of able help from EKU coaches Joni and Pat Stephens in making this a successful endeavor.
Events coordinator for The Bull, Tom Giacchini (also a former EKU golfer), gave a big assist. It was a great team effort for a good cause. Mahalo to all you good people.
Ramblings
Last Sunday, I emptied five inches of water that had fallen in a little over a week out of my rain gauge.
I couldn’t help but wonder how much each inch of rain cost all the golf clubs in central Kentucky. I would guess at least $20,000 an inch in lost cart and green fee revenue. Would be interesting to know.
Old Mother Nature, pounding the golf courses with the ice storm and all the rain, has certainly put a dent in revenues, not to mention the extra expense of mowing more often. Ouch! Guess you got to roll with the punches.
Congratulations to Stuart Witt on winning first-place honors in the regional tournament at the University Club in Lexington last Tuesday. He fired a 2-under par 69 to nose out Preston Prince of Henry Clay. He will advance to the State Tourney at Bowling Green starting today. Good luck, Stuart, and you da man!
