H.S. HOOPS: Central rolls past Woodford

RICHMOND — After playing three games in four days, the Lady Indians needed a break.

And following a day off, they certainly looked refreshed and recharged when they took on Woodford County Thursday in Richmond.

Larryn Brooks had 23 points, five rebounds and five assists and Ashton Feldhaus had 16 points and 11 rebounds as Madison Central pulled away late for a 61-43 win over the Yellowjackets. Bailey O’Bryan added 11 points and eight rebounds as the Lady Indians (18-3) wrapped up an undefeated four-game homestand.

“I thought our kids looked energized,” Central coach Robbie Cooksey said. “We had a day off (Wednesday) and I think we played well. We hit some shots. We shot free throws fairly well and we hit some threes. I thought everyone who played, played really well. Overall, it was a really good effort.”

During its four-game winning streak, Central had put together some solid, but not overly impressive wins — defeating Casey County (56-43), Lexington Catholic (60-51) and Clark County (56-44).

The Lady Indians were much more impressive against Woodford.

The game featured five lead changes and seven ties in the first half, but Central closed the half on a 12-0 run and took a 31-21 lead into halftime. The Lady Yellowjackets got back within nine points at the end of the third quarter (39-30), then Central took charge in the fourth, out-scoring the visitors 22-13.

Woodford shot just 29 percent from three-point range and had 10 turnovers.

“They are a good shooting team and we held them to 31 percent,” Cooksey said. “That’s a pretty good effort.”

O’Bryan was five-of-eight from the free throw line, had seven defensive rebounds and two assists. She also hit both her three-point attempts.

“When she is giving us 11 points and eight rebounds, then you know she is playing really good basketball,” Cooksey said of O’Bryan.

The Lady Indians are set to return to action today at Russell County. It will be their fifth game in seventh day.

“You are going to play four games in three days at the state tournament,” Cooksey said. “So, is it the perfect schedule? No. But, it kind of shows us what we are made of. We are a little bit banged. So, mentally they are having to battle through that.”
